Gian Bacardi
2010 • Founding Driver • 3 Wins • 5th Overall
Biography
Gian Bacardi was the founding driver of Rum Bum Racing, taking the wheel when his father Luis launched the team in 2010. A graduate of the Skip Barber Racing School Championship in 2008, Gian brought youthful energy and natural talent to the fledgling program.
At just 19 years old, Gian showed remarkable dedication. His mentor Matt Plumb spoke with glowing pride, noting that just four months before his first race, Gian couldn’t drive a stick shift—yet he quickly progressed to winning races. He crammed years of learning into just a few months through incredible commitment.
The Beginning
Rum Bum Racing made a stunning debut in 2010 at Daytona International Speedway. With Gian Bacardi and Matt Plumb sharing driving duties, the team won its very first race—an almost unheard-of achievement for a new organization. That victory validated Luis Bacardi’s vision and set the tone for what would become one of the most successful programs in series history.
Championship Contender
Gian and Matt proved to be a formidable pairing, finishing 5th overall in the 2010 championship standings with three victories. Beyond the Daytona win, they secured additional victories and podiums throughout the season, demonstrating that the debut success was no fluke. The young driver showed natural speed and the composure needed to compete at the professional level.
Return to Education
Mid-way through the 2010 season, Gian made the decision to return to school full-time, prioritizing his education. This led to Nick Longhi moving from his spotter role to co-driver, forming the championship-winning partnership with Matt Plumb.
Legacy
While Gian’s time behind the wheel was brief, his impact on Rum Bum Racing was significant. As the founding driver, he helped establish the team’s winning culture from day one. The team’s subsequent victories, podiums, and championships built upon the foundation laid during that remarkable 2010 debut season.
